Topic Title:

Before Vision Becomes Reality: How We Reach the Future with Our Hands?

Varun has spent the past decade at Google, witnessing and contributing to pivotal moments in the evolution of LLMs—the exploration phase, the shining stage of LLM development, and the current era where it is capturing global attention and reshaping industries. As the saying goes, “Rome wasn’t built in a day.”

In this seminar, Varun will share his journey and insights from an insider's perspective—navigating the uncertainties before ideas take center stage, and how to stay resilient and focused as vision slowly turns into reality. This perspective is especially relevant for early-stage honour students and researchers who are stepping into this fast-paced, ever-changing landscape.

The seminar will start with the share from Varun, and then followed with the Q&A session.

Profile

Varun Godbole graduated from his CS and Electrical Engineering degree from UWA in 2014. He worked at Google for ten years. For almost all of that time, he worked on deep learning research. In 2020 he was the co-first author of an article in Nature that demonstrated a superhuman mammography screening system. Most recently, he was on the core Gemini team for two years working on code generation. He recently left DeepMind to pursue a sabbatical.

He will come to deliver a seminar on LLMs and some interesting things he's been working on. A brief bio is below and he has some very interesting insights into the industry. See for example:
